WHAT IS MAGNETIC THERAPY?

WHAT IS IT FOR?
Specifically, magnetotherapy has numerous therapeutic indications. It can be prescribed as a treatment for: Inflammatory pathologies; Tendinitis; Fractures; Edema; Tendon Injuries; Muscle Injuries; Ligament Injuries; Capsulitis; Chronic bone pathologies such as Osteopenia and Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis; Postoperative pain.
HOW IT WORKS
As mentioned, magnetotherapy exploits the potential of electromagnetic waves.
The cells in our body have a specific electrical charge, resulting from the potential difference generated outside and inside the cell membrane. This potential, indicated as resting membrane potential, oscillates between -60 and -75 mV, with slight variations from cell to cell. Following an inflammatory event, the cell loses part of this electrical charge. This results in a decrease in the potential difference.
By applying magnets to the area of interest or a solenoid that generates an electromagnetic field within it, the cell membranes of damaged or inflamed tissues are repolarized, resulting from various pathological conditions. This repolarization allows the normal potential difference between the cells to be reestablished.
Magnetotherapy can be divided into:
• Low frequency magnetotherapy: the electromagnetic fields generated are around a frequency between 5-10 and 100-200 Hz. It is usually used to promote calcium assimilation, stimulate bone calcification, and strengthen the skeletal system;
• High frequency magnetotherapy: magnets are used that generate high-frequency magnetic fields, between 18 and 900 MHz. Particularly suitable for promoting blood circulation and reducing inflammatory conditions.
THE EFFECTS
The effects of magnetotherapy can be of various nature:
• Analgesics and painkillers, resulting in reduced pain and inflammation;
• Vasodilators, designed to stimulate and promote blood circulation;
• Osteogenesi: stimulates bone regeneration, especially in cases of osteoporosis or fractures with delayed consolidation;
• Anti-edematous, for the reduction of swelling;
• Muscle relaxant, acting on muscle contracture;
• Regenerating and detoxifying.
WHEN IS IT CONTRAINDICATED?
Magnetotherapy is generally contraindicated for:
• Patients with pacemakers and hearing aids
• Pregnant women
