WHAT IS KINESIO TAPING?

Created in the 1970s by Dr. Kenzo Kase, the kinesio taping it's a elastic-type patch made of cotton, used in rehabilitation, sports, orthopedic medicine and physiotherapy.

WHAT IS IT FOR?

Generally, it is used in physiotherapy for the treatment of small neurological injuries And orthopedic. Specifically, however, it can be used for: Joint Sprains; Edema; Joint Trauma; Muscle Injuries; Ligament Injuries; Contractures; Lumbago; Neck Pain; Back Pain; Joint Instability; Postural Pathologies.

HOW IT WORKS

The tape is applied directly on the skin or area to be treatedThanks to nerve receptors present on the epidermis (mechanoreceptors), the patch is able to communicate with the underlying tissues through stimuli, inputs, which are processed by our brain, displaying a response. This allows for the inhibition of an overloaded and contracted muscle or the stimulation of an inhibited one, facilitating one direction or mechanical correction rather than another. One of the most recognized functions in the scientific community is its lymphatic drainage effect, as the tape lifts the tissue, allowing the return of underlying fluids, for example in cases of edema or bruising.

The patch does not release any type of drug. If applied correctly, it can be a valid aid in rehabilitation.

THE EFFECTS

There are several effects achieved through the use of kinesio taping. Among these:
• Relieves pain;
• Facilitates lymphatic drainage;
• Promotes the reabsorption of edema;
• Counteracts tissue swelling due to compression;
• Contributes to motor recovery;
• Facilitates muscle activation;
• Inhibits muscle activation;
• Corrects the position of the joint.

WHEN IS IT CONTRAINDICATED?

There are no particular contraindications. Furthermore, since it's made of cotton, it minimizes the risk of allergies, skin irritation, and open wounds.

Andrea Sgambati

CEO of FisioFlaminio, manual therapist specializing in osteopathic techniques.

Since my early years at university, the cornerstone of my career has been to develop a comprehensive assessment of the patient, essential for optimal physiotherapy treatment.

Through in-depth study of manual therapy, it was possible to optimize and apply the principles of rehabilitation medicine, which extends beyond the basic mechanisms of "traditional" rehabilitation. My training began at a Swiss university (Lugano, 2010-2014) with a four-year academic program, all focused on orthopedic science, which is essential for understanding musculoskeletal pathologies.

Subsequently, in 2015, I obtained a master's degree in Australia (Perth, Curtin University) in Orthopaedic Manual Therapy, which allowed me to learn osteopathic techniques and spinal manipulations according to the concepts of Maitland, Kaltenborn, Mulligan and Mackenzie.

After my experience abroad, I returned to Italy as manager of the rehabilitation center at Via Donatello 75, becoming a partner in 2019. My work at this rehabilitation center allowed me to work with athletes from the National Fencing Team, as well as with Serie A volleyball and basketball professionals.

From 2020 to 2023, I completed my second Master's degree in Milan (GSTM), where I further developed osteopathic and manual techniques, essential for the rapid and effective treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, including the peripheral and central nervous systems. This program has qualified me for the internationally recognized title of Orthokinetic Rehabilitator, a new professional profile in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with musculoskeletal disorders.
