WHAT ARE ULTRASOUNDS?

THE'ultrasound therapy Ultrasound therapy is a technique, common in physiotherapy, which uses the healing properties of high-frequency sound waves, i.e. ultrasound.

WHAT ARE THEY FOR?

Ultrasound is widely used in the medical field. In physiotherapy and rehabilitation, it is used as a therapeutic modality for the treatment of: Edema; Inflammatory Pathologies; Bursitis; Plantar Fasciitis; Heel Pain; Tendinitis.

HOW THEY WORK

The ultrasound They are acoustic waves with a frequency higher than 20 kHz (20,000 Hertz), inaudible to the human ear. By exploiting the potential and penetrating capacity of these waves, theultrasound therapy It is considered a mechanical thermal therapy, capable of generating particular benefits.

This treatment consists of ultrasound irradiation of the tissues, which produces two effects: a mechanical pulsating effect and a thermal effect which, together, facilitate and enhance cellular and intracellular exchanges.

Specifically, irradiated tissues cause the impact of cellular and intracellular structures, resulting in energy expenditure and heat production. This is the source of the healing effect.

To perform ultrasound therapy, a conductive gel is applied to the treatment area and the electromedical device, allowing the transmission of sound vibrations. A session lasts between 10 and 15 minutes.

THE EFFECTS

As indicated above, the effects and effectiveness of ultrasound therapy depend on cellular and intracellular energy exchanges. Specifically, these can be of the following types:
• analgesic;
• anti-inflammatory;
• anti-edematous
• muscle relaxant;
• metabolism stimulant
• stimulates the reabsorption of fluids that cause inflammation.

WHEN ARE THEY CONTRAINDICATED?

There are cases in which ultrasound therapy is not recommended or indicated. Furthermore, it is not applied to certain areas of the body. A specialist will evaluate the prescription.

Andrea Sgambati

CEO of FisioFlaminio, manual therapist specializing in osteopathic techniques.

Since my early years at university, the cornerstone of my career has been to develop a comprehensive assessment of the patient, essential for optimal physiotherapy treatment.

Through in-depth study of manual therapy, it was possible to optimize and apply the principles of rehabilitation medicine, which extends beyond the basic mechanisms of "traditional" rehabilitation. My training began at a Swiss university (Lugano, 2010-2014) with a four-year academic program, all focused on orthopedic science, which is essential for understanding musculoskeletal pathologies.

Subsequently, in 2015, I obtained a master's degree in Australia (Perth, Curtin University) in Orthopaedic Manual Therapy, which allowed me to learn osteopathic techniques and spinal manipulations according to the concepts of Maitland, Kaltenborn, Mulligan and Mackenzie.

After my experience abroad, I returned to Italy as manager of the rehabilitation center at Via Donatello 75, becoming a partner in 2019. My work at this rehabilitation center allowed me to work with athletes from the National Fencing Team, as well as with Serie A volleyball and basketball professionals.

From 2020 to 2023, I completed my second Master's degree in Milan (GSTM), where I further developed osteopathic and manual techniques, essential for the rapid and effective treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, including the peripheral and central nervous systems. This program has qualified me for the internationally recognized title of Orthokinetic Rehabilitator, a new professional profile in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with musculoskeletal disorders.
