WHAT IS TENS?

There Tens, acronym for TransCutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, is a technique used to control acute or chronic painful conditions, through the stimulation of nerve fibers.

WHAT IS IT FOR?

Specifically, TENS is indicated for the treatment of: Joint Pain; Tendon Pain; Ligament Injuries; Low Back Pain; Tendinitis; Muscle Injuries; Contractures; Fatigue; Edema.

It is generally applied in the physiotherapy field, but can also be used as a complementary treatment to other therapeutic approaches for pain management.

HOW IT WORKS

TENS involves the passage of low voltage electrical current through the use of one or more electrodes, applied at the skin level, in the area to be treated. These electrodes are connected to a power supply unit that allows the delivery of painless pulses by modulating their amplitude. These pulses allow you to block or reduce pain signals And relieve muscle spasms. Therefore, TENS, through continuous electrical stimulation of the skin receptors (mechanoreceptors), will lower the activation threshold, habituating the stimulated tissue.
The frequency of application, intensity, and treatment area depend on the specific pathological condition and the therapeutic objectives indicated by the specialist during the visit.

THE EFFECTS

TENS represents a valid alternative to drug therapy for pain reduction.

WHEN IS IT CONTRAINDICATED?

Although TENS is a safe procedure, there are cases in which this treatment option is not indicated. Specifically, in cases of:
• Patients with epilepsy or heart rhythm disorders;
• Patients with severe skin diseases.
• Pacemaker

Andrea Sgambati

CEO of FisioFlaminio, manual therapist specializing in osteopathic techniques.

Since my early years at university, the cornerstone of my career has been to develop a comprehensive assessment of the patient, essential for optimal physiotherapy treatment.

Through in-depth study of manual therapy, it was possible to optimize and apply the principles of rehabilitation medicine, which extends beyond the basic mechanisms of "traditional" rehabilitation. My training began at a Swiss university (Lugano, 2010-2014) with a four-year academic program, all focused on orthopedic science, which is essential for understanding musculoskeletal pathologies.

Subsequently, in 2015, I obtained a master's degree in Australia (Perth, Curtin University) in Orthopaedic Manual Therapy, which allowed me to learn osteopathic techniques and spinal manipulations according to the concepts of Maitland, Kaltenborn, Mulligan and Mackenzie.

After my experience abroad, I returned to Italy as manager of the rehabilitation center at Via Donatello 75, becoming a partner in 2019. My work at this rehabilitation center allowed me to work with athletes from the National Fencing Team, as well as with Serie A volleyball and basketball professionals.

From 2020 to 2023, I completed my second Master's degree in Milan (GSTM), where I further developed osteopathic and manual techniques, essential for the rapid and effective treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, including the peripheral and central nervous systems. This program has qualified me for the internationally recognized title of Orthokinetic Rehabilitator, a new professional profile in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with musculoskeletal disorders.
