WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL BANDAGE?
The functional bandage It's a type of technique used in physiotherapy following sprains, muscle tears, and/or tendon, muscle, and ligament injuries, with the aim of allowing the patient to regain joint and motor activity in the short term. It involves partial immobilization of the treated area.
WHAT IS IT FOR?
Functional bandaging is used for: Joint Instability; Trauma; Myofascial Problems; Sprains; Ligament Injuries; Muscle Injuries; Capsuloligamentous Injuries.
HOW IT WORKS
To perform this technique, elastic bandages of varying elasticity, tension, and size are used. Inelastic bandages can also be used. These, applied directly to the area to be restrained, allow for themodular partial immobilization of that area, slightly limiting mobility in the direction of movement in which the pain occurs. This leads to a reduction in pain and recovery of functionality.
THE EFFECTS
Functional bandaging is generally aimed at reducing healing times compared to traditional immobilization methods. In this regard, its use produces several effects, namely:
• Reduction of painful symptoms;
• Recovery of joint and motor functions following an injury to tendons, muscles and/or ligaments;
• Recovery of muscle function;
• Improved vascularization;
• Correction of muscle alignment.
WHEN IS IT CONTRAINDICATED?
It is the specialist who evaluates the use and effectiveness of the functional bandage.
