WHAT IS ELECTROSTIMULATION?

Electrostimulation is a physiotherapy technique that uses an electrostimulator to stimulate muscle contractions through low-frequency electrical micro-impulses.

WHAT IS IT FOR?

In physiotherapy and rehabilitation it is used for the treatment of: Hypotrophy, or reduction in the volume of muscle tissue that causes weakness or partial loss of motor function; this condition is often caused by immobilization or prolonged inactivity or pathological conditions that lead to muscle damage; Hypotonia, or reduction in muscle tone; it is a clinical manifestation resulting from certain pathologies affecting the nervous and muscular systems.

HOW IT WORKS

Electrostimulation is performed using an electrostimulator and electrodes placed on the patient's body, near the area or muscle group to be treated. The electrostimulator sends electrical impulses to the electrodes, which cause stimulation.

THE EFFECTS

The effects of electrostimulation depend on the pulse parameters set: type, duration, frequency, intensity, latency.

Generally, this technique allows you to:
• improve muscle tone and trophism following trauma;
• firm and/or combat any blemishes
In the therapeutic field, it is used for post-operative conditions, where weight loss, tone, and trophism are observed, especially in the first few weeks after surgery. In sports, it is used to complement muscle-building techniques, designed to support athletes' preparation.

WHEN IS IT CONTRAINDICATED?

Although it is a painless and safe practice, electrostimulation is not indicated for those patients:
• With pacemaker;
• Affected by epilepsy or particular neoplasms;
• With capillary fragility.

Andrea Sgambati

CEO of FisioFlaminio, manual therapist specializing in osteopathic techniques.

Since my early years at university, the cornerstone of my career has been to develop a comprehensive assessment of the patient, essential for optimal physiotherapy treatment.

Through in-depth study of manual therapy, it was possible to optimize and apply the principles of rehabilitation medicine, which extends beyond the basic mechanisms of "traditional" rehabilitation. My training began at a Swiss university (Lugano, 2010-2014) with a four-year academic program, all focused on orthopedic science, which is essential for understanding musculoskeletal pathologies.

Subsequently, in 2015, I obtained a master's degree in Australia (Perth, Curtin University) in Orthopaedic Manual Therapy, which allowed me to learn osteopathic techniques and spinal manipulations according to the concepts of Maitland, Kaltenborn, Mulligan and Mackenzie.

After my experience abroad, I returned to Italy as manager of the rehabilitation center at Via Donatello 75, becoming a partner in 2019. My work at this rehabilitation center allowed me to work with athletes from the National Fencing Team, as well as with Serie A volleyball and basketball professionals.

From 2020 to 2023, I completed my second Master's degree in Milan (GSTM), where I further developed osteopathic and manual techniques, essential for the rapid and effective treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, including the peripheral and central nervous systems. This program has qualified me for the internationally recognized title of Orthokinetic Rehabilitator, a new professional profile in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with musculoskeletal disorders.
